How to Create a Home Office Outside

Martina Mercer
March27/ 2017

Even if you’re not employed full time, there’s a strong possibility you do have a home office. A home office is useful for completing tax returns, communicating through emails and even leisurely pursuits such as social media and photo editing.

As the weather becomes warmer many of us resent staying inside to complete our book keeping or to browse a myriad of online shops. Creating a home office is easy, and it can give you the best of both worlds, allowing you to enjoy the sunshine while completing technological tasks.

  1. Decide on the Amount of Usage

Before you buy any garden furniture for your home office it’s important to decide on the usage. Will you be using it everyday, are you self employed and working from home? Or will you be using it whenever the sun shines and the fancy takes you?

If you need to use it daily, a more solid garden structure, along with a bigger investment, may be wise. However, if you’re using it only on sunny days a gazebo type structure should suffice.

  1. Check Out Your Wifi

You may find the perfect spot in your garden only to discover the Wi-Fi is out of range. If you can take the Ethernet cable outside, into a sturdy waterproof structure this shouldn’t really matter. However, if you choose a gazebo, you’ll need to be able to connect to the home’s Wi-Fi. You can move the router indoors or choose a suitable Wi-Fi extender to help.

  1. Find Somewhere Level

You can make a base for your home office, but to save time it’s best to choose a level spot in the garden. This will provide a stable foundation for the structure you choose.

  1. Choose Your Garden Furniture

You can now choose the garden furniture you need. It could be a complete log cabin, a pagoda, a roomy shed, a hot tub enclosure, a gazebo, an arbour, or simply a desk with a cantilever parasol.

  1. Add Outdoor Storage

Outdoor storage is all the rage at the moment as homeowners see the value of storing items outside. You can find cheap outdoor storage that doubles as a bench or seating, so you can store the less important items.

An outdoor office is the perfect way to take advantage of the flexibility of working from home. Good garden furniture ensures you receive protection from the sun while being able to work outside in complete comfort.

Tips on Appealing to the Millennial Market with Tech

Martina Mercer
February23/ 2017

2017 is set to be a huge year for technology and SEO and while many don’t see the correlation between the two, they actually go hand in hand. Mastering both these aspects in eCommerce, marketing and business, ensures you not only please your customer, you please Google too.

There are some major changes afoot which will shape the way people search on the web for your product or service. You’ll start to see a decline in the nonsensical keywords such as Exchange Foreign Coins, and content will be geared towards answering questions (if the business owner is smart enough). Here’s why:

We All Want a Virtual Assistant

Google assistant is paving the way for better searching. With Google assistant your customer asks a question and the results are presented based on which website answered the question the best. This makes your FAQ page essential but also means you should weave in questions and answers throughout the rest of your copy. In 2016 the onus was on using mobiles for search, as time progresses, you’ll see, the onus will be on using voice. Practice this for yourself, first search for answer to a question using your browser, then try again using Siri. You’ll find you use two or three extra words when speaking than you do when entering a search term in your search bar. We’re ultimately lazy, and can’t be bothered to type, but we still want the most relevant search results and we’re doing our own refining.

For example: In 2010 people used an average of three words to search for a product, service or answer to their question. Today, the millennial market use an average of six words. We may even see a return of “Ask Jeeves”.

Amazon and Google Know Their SEO

Hot on the heels of Google assistant is the Amazon echo, or Alexa to her friends. Alexa is a wonderful piece of technology that can perform an ever increasing amount of tasks. Again, Alexa works through oral instruction and so will present answers to your questions or demands. Customers can shop for anything through Alexa, while finding local businesses, booking restaurant tables, and checking the weather outside. Unlike 3D TV that was a flash in the pan, this way of searching is set to become more popular than ever, and you need to adapt your content to suit the new Search Engine Optimisation rules.

How to be Google Penalty Proof

I am a marketing consultant for clients such as Blacknote and Tax Rebate Services, however, these understand the importance of quality content for SEO. A lot of clients come to me after receiving Google penalties for obtaining dodgy links and stuffing their content with nonsensical search terms. To remain Google penalty proof all you have to do is write (and feature content) with the customer’s user experience in mind. The algorithms are so sophisticated now, even using LSI keywords to determine the suitability of the content that it’s best to provide content that the customer wants. Google, after all, simply wants to display the most engaging, informative, relevant content in the quickest time possible. Answering questions and providing information ticks all of these boxes, and so if your intentions are honourable, you will succeed.

Taking the Cost out of the Reverse Supply Chain

Martina Mercer
January10/ 2017

Mark Catley, Head of E-Commerce Development, Norbert Dentressangle

Are you doing all you can to reduce, optimise and wring maximum value from returns?

Refunds go with the territory in retail, with high street retailers expecting an average returns rate of 10%. While the rate of online returns differs based on industry and location, analysts say anywhere between 25% and 50% is commonplace.

According to the IMRG, the number of items returned during 2012 was 236 million, predicted to rise to 397 million by 2017. And research by Webloyalty, in association with analysts Conlumino, found that the cost of returning product to UK fashion retailers reached £90.76 million in 2012, of which £61.52 million was borne by the retailers themselves.

However, with the adoption of appropriate technology and best practices in the reverse supply chain (and a bit of vision), it is possible for returns management not only to become an entirely cost neutral activity but also to promote customer loyalty and drive sales.

Reducing returns

By far the simplest way to reduce the cost of returns is to reduce the rate and volume of returned product. While impossible to eradicate, the incidence of returns and the associated costs can be dramatically reduced by working with vendors and carriers to minimise product damage and improve delivery accuracy. Indeed, through the introduction of improvements in packaging, materials handling and carrier management, one of Norbert Dentressangle’s customers – a major DIY retailer – was able to reduce return rates by 42%.

Closing the physical loop

In traditional supply chains, integrating the outbound and inbound supply chains is common and has clear advantages in terms of both cost and vehicle utilisation (and therefore the environment). Given the discrepancy in their profiles however, there is little opportunity to close the store/home delivery loop.

However, the growth of ‘click and collect’ and return to store services increasingly creates a new supply chain dynamic depending on how retailers get the stock from the stock holding point into the store – using traditional supply chain routes (e.g. adding e-commerce orders to store delivery replenishments) or potentially new routes via parcel carriers, pallet networks or dedicated ‘round robin’ vehicles. This is especially relevant where drop shipping is used and where the physical store replenishment and e-commerce supply chains are not integrated.

Tying these additional delivery streams to the reverse supply chain (including store returns) provides an opportunity to streamline processes and improve vehicle utilisation, or carrier efficiency on collection of store based returns.

Halfords and Marks & Spencer are amongst those, not only to have spotted this opportunity, but to be actively taking advantage of it.

TAKING COST OUT OF THE REVERSE SUPPLY CHAIN 2/…

An even greater opportunity exists in relation to collaboration between retailers, allowing the customer collect or return goods from or to one retailer via another retailer’s stores. This, along with increasing recognition that competitive advantage is achieved through product assortment, availability and price and not necessarily through the supply chain, represents another step towards the possibility of shared user returns centres, offering substantial cost and efficiency benefits.

And, given the massive environmental benefits associated with shared trading, delivery, transport, collections and disposition networks, the retail supply chain would do well to innovate now and get ahead of the game or face being forced down this path by tougher and tougher environmental legislation in coming years.

In the short term however, direct from consumer returns are likely to remain the norm. Efficiency in dealing with these is imperative in building brand loyalty, basket value and repeat purchasing. On the flip side, according to research from Collect+, poor returns experiences lead to 58% of online shoppers permanently shunning outlets.

Recovery management

As well as reducing the costs associated with the movement of returned product, what happens to that product when it reaches the handling point is critical in order to maximise the recovery value.

Value is achieved by having a range of disposition routes available for a range of different returns scenarios, taking into consideration factors including type, value and condition of product and any legislative requirements, e.g., WEEE.

In the majority of cases, there is a hierarchy of disposition routes for returned items, dependent on the recovery value they typically yield. These include – in order of desirability – returning perfect items to stock for re-sale at full price (100% of retail value), returning selected marked or discontinued items to stock for sale (either by theretailer or a re-seller) at a mark down (50-90% of retail value), returining faulty products or those purchased on a sale or return basis to the vendor for a credit (100% of cost price), product re-work such as re-packaging or repair (50-90% of retail value), the sale of items to a ‘jobber’ (10-80% of retail value), recycling (5-20% of cost price), donating items to charity (feel good factor plus possible good publicity) or, if there is no other option, disposing of the item (0% recovery value plus cost of disposal).

Progressive companies are taking a more aggressive approach to managing returns, with a focus on getting product back into existing sales channels quicker, through multiple channel options such as making it easier through online advertising and clear concise web targeting.

More effective returns and recovery management also significantly reduces waste to landfill – with landfill tax at £48 per tonne and an escalator which will see this increase to £80 by 2014, this is a priority for retailers.

While recovery management is a mature discipline in the US, in the UK, many retailers are only now beginning to ‘grasp the nettle’. However, those which have done so successfully are realising massive bottom line benefits.

If you are a small business you can see if you’re entitled to a tax rebate on your inventory, uniforms or products in order to help with the initial cost of facilitating returns.

Gift Ideas for Executives

Martina Mercer
November18/ 2016

The Christmas Gift Guides are out in full force with many trying to be a little different this year but what if you don’t want to buy a pair of fluffy socks?

There are some great subscription based gift ideas but I wanted to dig a little deeper to look into what was on offer across the internet and how these could translate as the perfect Christmas gift ideas for executives.

I think I’ve done it.

I’m confident that all of these perfect presents will be well received by people who understand business, culture, a stress free life and the finer things in life. They’re brilliant gifts for entrepreneurs or for anyone looking to broaden their horizons and improve their home life.

Here’s my pick of the best out of the box gifts for him, for her and for you!

Guitar Lessons

Who wouldn’t benefit from some personal tuition with one on one guitar lessons? This is a great gift for anyone, even those who have never tried to play an instrument. As they take their new lesson in the New Year, they will thank you for their thoughtfulness and with a great music teacher they’ll also have a wonderful social experience.

PPC or Adwords

It may seem like a strange gift but I know I would adore a voucher for a PPC agency in my stocking. Imagine, your friend’s blog, website or new endeavour could receive a boost in the New Year, when business slows down dramatically. What’s not to love? Talk to a PPC Agency and see what you could buy for Christmas, be it a full site boost or a one off consultation.

Personalised Number Plates

Even I would love a personalised number plate and I drive a little battered Yaris. A friend or loved one would adore opening this on Christmas morning. You can make it personal to the two of you or choose a registration you know they’ll love. It’s the gift that will keep on giving as they’ll think of you with a smile every time they take the car out.

Professional Dog Training

There’s a reason we’re advised against buying puppies for Christmas. Those that do usually seek a new home for the pup in January when the novelty wears off and they realise the puppy must be trained. Even the best behaved puppies and dogs could do with some improvement, whether it’s learning new tricks or having a brush up on the basics, such as toilet training or chewing. A session with a well respected dog behaviourist will be a gift your dog loving friend will adore, as a well trained pup makes for a much happier home.

Fame for Five Minutes

My job is to gain exposure for brands through my magazine articles and I will happily do this for a friend so they can see themselves on the cover of a digital magazine for a day, to share with their friends. Just get in touch and I’ll do the rest.

Have you ever bought a gift that’s out of the box? Let me know as I’d love to add it to my list!

The New Google Penguin 4.0 Update in Miniature

Martina Mercer
November15/ 2016
From my position it’s quite humorous to see shady SEO companies running around like headless chickens after the news of the new Penguin 4.0 update.
I’ve always maintained, even back when keyword stuffing was on trend, that quality content will always win. Google want to provide their customers with high quality content that’s relevant, engaging and informative and you should too. If you care about your visitors and the customer journey than no amount of algorithm updates should bother you.
A good site is one that doesn’t mislead customers, it answers questions before they’re asked and it provides great information alongside engaging content. When this is backed up by a high quality social media campaign and plenty of endorsements from other sites, it results in a website that will always win, a website, or a page.
The pages that sell will always rank lower as Google doesn’t want to recommend sales pages. This is because they have a perfectly good model in AdWords and PPC for this. They want to lead searchers to content they need, content they will be thrilled to land on. They don’t want to present visitors with spam, or with info that frustrates and confuses, or blatantly tries to sell. (Unless the searcher is looking for a product to buy, in which case Google Shopping will always dominate, that’s not to say you can’t rank organically for an eCommerce page.)
How do you create a website that’s organically friendly SEO wise? How do you make yourself invincible against the many Google updates? The easy answer is, by being genuine and by creating customer loyalty, By leaving your visitors with a good impression, by impressing so much they want to share your content, by providing exactly what the customer needs at the right time, in the right place. It’s that simple.
Backlinks help, of course they do, and you can build high quality backlinks by featuring on reputable sites where you’ll provide tips and advice to a whole new audience. If you provide all of the above in your website, backlinks will also come naturally as visitors engage with your content and share it.
If you’re hands off SEO and don’t like to get into the nitty gritty of PPC management make sure you choose a reputable company who can adopt your brand as their own. As the new Google assistant rises in popularity with the launch of the Google smartphone it’s even more important that your business pleases the customer before it begins to think of dominating the search engines as Google will know!

Handy Hints and Tips for Branding and Marketing Your Business

Martina Mercer
October10/ 2016

We’d all love our businesses to grow overnight through word of mouth making them an international success however the reality is that with so many online websites competing for the same attention we need to give our products and services a big push to get off the ground.

This can be quite daunting as the word marketing often implies a big budget, however there are ways you can brand and market your business yourself using time instead of money.

Where to Start with Branding and Marketing Your Business?

Let’s start with branding…

You can save oodles of money with logo design and branding if you have a clear idea of your business vision first. Once you’ve decided on the direction the logo design shouldn’t cost much at all.

You can do this by taking time out to assess you company objectively. Ask all staff and colleagues to do the same and even call in favours from family and friends.

Is your business…

Fun and Quirky?

If your target audience is trend setters or teenagers you’ll want your branding to reflect this. If this is the direction you’d like to go in you’ll need to make sure that your website copy, your Facebook updates and your tweets always match the style. A fresh funky logo will look completely out of place if your website copy is stuffy and corporate, it will also confuse potential customers and probably put most of them off.

Professional and Corporate?

If you’re a firm of lawyers or bankers you need a brand that signifies how serious you are about your profession. People will rarely take a chance on a flippant brand when they are investing serious amounts of money or relying on your service to get them the results they need. Take some time out and look at your whole message through fresh eyes, make sure the copy reflects how professional you are but is also simple to understand.

Once you’ve decided on your business message you can then give a clear brief to a logo designer and spread the word across all of your merchandise along with creating an online presence.

Creating an Online Presence

Creating an online presence is essential for marketing your business as not only does it help with SEO for your website it also potentially gives you a viral reach of billions. SEO is important for pushing your website up the ranks on the larger search engines making sure your product or service is perfectly placed on the first page whenever a consumer has already made the decision to buy. Invest in a good PPC Agency, and you can enjoy profit on every click. Don’t be fooled by those without real PPC knowledge, research thoroughly and make sure you see the results the Adwords agency has obtained for others.

Social networks are amazing free tools to utilize as when handled correctly they can create followers that will share your business message, making you known through the power of social media.

When starting out on twitter it can seem quite daunting as with few followers it may seem impossible to build up a fan base. However start by following people relevant to your business, for example if you’re selling a new gardening item follow the gardening magazines along writers that write the features and  the celebrities that present the gardening shows.

Make sure you interact but resist the urge to spam. Reply to tweets and use your personality to encourage users to become interested. Spamming includes just posting links to your products which will instantly annoy any follower, instead thank every new follower personally, ask them a question and show a genuine interest in their tweets. As you interact you’ll also become visible to their followers too, and soon the effect will snowball.

Inform

Another way to inform people of your business is to blog or write articles. By writing articles that add value to the reader you’ll not only create new customers but you’ll also create backlinks for your website that are proven to push your

business up the rankings. You can contact bloggers that may have an interest in providing you with a guest spot as long as they’re not in direct competition. For example, money saving bloggers will enjoy a blog from a discount store as they can inform their readers of savings.

Spread the Word

Once you’ve decided on a brand you can tell the world and there’s no better way to do this than through a press release. There are hundreds of free press release sites you can submit to and if it’s written in the right style it may even be picked up by a journalist for Yahoo News or something similar. Decide on your news, identify why your brand is different to others out there, detail how you will be benefitting the public and show how lives can be enhanced when choosing your product or service.

Consumers Stop at Nothing to Find Discounts and Bargains

Martina Mercer
October04/ 2016

How far would you go to find discounts or for a bargain?
From trawling through forums to signing up to newsletters, how savvy online shoppers are stopping at nothing for discounts

· Average Brit spends two and half hours every week shopping online
· To save cash, savvy shoppers are contacting social media teams for discounts or writing letters of complaint before actually receiving goods
· Estimated 16m of us will trawl though forums before making purchases

The rise of online shopping is empowering consumers to become serial bargain-hunters with many now stopping at nothing to secure a discount.

In a study by online marketplace Flubit.com, two thirds of people (60%) admitted to regularly searching for discount codes before buying items online. Meanwhile, an estimated two million people have written a letter of complaint before actually receiving goods to secure a freebee or discount on a future purchase.

Online shopping has given consumers far more choice and Brits are spending an increasing amount of time browsing for goods on the internet. Flubit research has found that the average person spends around two and a half hours a week shopping online, with one in three (34%) regularly doing so during work hours.

The trend has led to a growing awareness among consumers about how to secure the best deals, with an estimated three million people now visiting companies’ Facebook pages to ask their social teams for discounts.

Other common techniques for finding a bargain include signing up to newsletters to receive one-off discounts and searching for money-saving tips on forums, with one in three people (34%) saying they had done both. A further 8% say that they have emailed the company they are buying goods from to secure a better deal.

Flubit spokesperson Tia Saunders said: “Today’s consumers are extremely savvy when it comes to securing the best prices for products and are unlikely to make a purchase without due diligence. The rise of online shopping has given customers better choice, placing more power in their hands, while social media has rightly given them a louder voice.”

“At Flubit, our business relies on this growing demand for a bargain, which is why we go direct to retailers to ensure we beat Amazon’s price.”

It’s important to check the credit score of consumers before offering credit. Those with a bad credit score may benefit from a “savings club” where they pay weekly until the big shop in December

FREE Car Concierge for Your Car Service for Busy Professionals

Martina Mercer

Summary: Motor Quoters brings new customers a way to enjoy a stress free, convenient, MOT or car service through the website’s unique features and offerings.

In a technological age it’s still surprising that many of our daily tasks are so time consuming and inconvenient. While we can shop online and organise events with ease in minutes, there’s still a gap in the market when it comes to supplying a trusted, convenient, car service.

Motor Quoters aims to fill this gap by offering customers a new, more advanced, way to book an MOT or car service. With the focus on the ultimate convenience, Motor Quoters allows the customer to enjoy a delivery and collection service from their local garages.

How it Works

Customers visit the Motor Quoters site and choose their options. They can then see the desired results of garages who offer a pick up and drop off service, along with the garage’s name, price and location.

Customers can also filter results by price or proximity, depending on what is the most important to them when booking a car service or MOT. Once the garage is decided, the customer can then book immediately through the website and receive written confirmation via email.

Motor Quoters transparent pricing, trusted rating and commitment to involving the customer every step of the way makes this a service that’s currently in demand by busy professionals, students and working parents.

The founder, Fida Chishti, explains what he envisaged when launching Motor Quoters, he says, “Transparency and trust are the two most important factors of our service alongside convenience. We want to build a loyal relationship with our customers and provide a service that makes life easier. This is why we give all prices up front and never try to upsell to the customer. Our service is completely free and we don’t add on any fees for ourselves. You receive the same price as if you were booking with your local garage, except with added convenience and a dedicated customer support person.”

The onus is on convenience for the car owner, with many of Motor Quoters garages offering to pick up the car and return it the same day. This collection and delivery option allows the customer to continue with their daily lives without taking time out of work or from the home, for their car service or MOT.

Right now, Motor Quoters is facilitating a more convenient, cheaper, car service and MOT for car owners in London, while naturally expanding to offer these modern features to car owners across the whole of the UK.

Women in marketing the most likely to freelance, start a business, or work in another field during a career break

Martina Mercer
July13/ 2016

30% of women in marketing who have taken a career break started a business during their time away from the workforce, compared to 21% of women in other professions.
33% worked in another field, compared to just 20% among professionals in other fields.
33% took on freelance work, while just 17% of professionals in other fields did the same.

Original research from Robert Walters has revealed that women in marketing are among the most active during a career break (often to have children, but also for a host of other reasons), being more likely than other professionals to freelance, work in another field, or start a business.

33% of women had worked in another field or freelanced during their time away from the workforce (compared to 20% and 17% respectively among other professionals) and 30% of women in marketing had started a business compared to 21% on average.

Ed Glover, Associate Director for Marketing recruitment at Robert Walters, comments,

“While many women take a break from the workforce in order to have children, travel, caring for relatives or pursuing education are also common reasons for women to take a break from their careers.”

“Marketing professionals are often in the fortunate position of having valuable transferable skills which can be applied to a range of pursuits while they are out of the workforce.”

“While they may find that conventional full time hours are unsuitable based on their needs, many women are evidently able to successfully pursue their career in other ways.”

WOMEN IN MARKETING SEEK FAMILY FRIENDLY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES ON RETURN TO WORK

The research also revealed that 59% of women in marketing consider moving into a more family friendly industry or career a priority when returning from a career break. Businesses looking to retain women who take a career break, or to attract women returning the workforce into marketing roles, should be aware of the importance these professionals place on an employer that can offer a good work life balance.

Ed Glover continues:

“Given the fact that a significant number of women in marketing pursue their career in alternative ways when on a career break, employers have a valuable opportunity to take advantage of this ambition and proactivity by attracting these professionals to their businesses.”

“Employers should focus on showing commitment to flexible working policies to attract top professionals from this group.”

“The fact that so many women in marketing are able to pursue freelance work or start their own businesses when on a career break demonstrates that when given the flexibility to structure their own working hours these professionals are able to deliver strong results for a business.”

It isn’t just women in marketing that this relates to, women in software also feel the strain of finding the work life balance. Sarah Dowzell, is a woman in a man’s world in HR Software, and she documents her experiences on her blog. Along with her partner she founded Natural HR, a HR software that simplifies the human resources process. This has not been without its challenges though but Sarah manages it all with aplomb and is candid with her advice as she gives advice to other working mums.

Finding the Work Life Balance as an Entrepreneur

Martina Mercer

When choosing to become a freelancer, many friends and family will envy the lifestyle they picture you to have. Working from home from anywhere in the country, they imagine long lazy days watching daytime TV whilst answering emails in the ad breaks.

Any freelancer knows that this couldn’t be further from the truth; working from home is a strain and one that needs a good support network if it’s ever going to succeed. Family may decide that as you’re at home you can juggle tasks, such as babysitting, waiting for the washer repair man, or nipping to the post office for them because they can’t due to their job.

It takes patience and a direct response to make even the closest of family realise that between the hours of nine to five you are working, probably harder than anyone else. As a freelancer you won’t be paid for sick days and a holiday will take months to arrange. Christmas is carefully managed so you don’t miss out on the money.

Martina Mercer is an award winning entrepreneur, copywriter, author and marketing consultant. She works with brands such as Lush, Cross, Waitrose, and knows a thing or two about the work life balance,

“I’ve just moved into an office into the paddock next to my house as I needed to make that separation between work and home life. Although I often work from a client’s office when I’m at home it can be difficult to be professional after 3.30pm when the children are quite excited to be home and just want their mum. I found the constant interruptions would make work spin out until late evening but now, if they don’t disturb me, I can get through my to do list by 5pm. I know not everyone has the space to do this but a shared office or even the library can help a freelancer make that distinction between life and work. Of course, many mumpreneurs, work from home to be there for their children and so, it can be an oxymoron but I’ve found childcare is the best thing I ever did for the sake of my business, and the kids, as I now have set hours and can concentrate on work 100% while I’m there and the children 100% when I leave the office. Before, neither were getting 100% attention!”

As we work harder as freelancers, sometimes the nine to five day can seem like a dream, especially when starting out, we’ll still answer emails at midnight just in case we miss an important contract or a job is offered elsewhere. This is where determination is needed and a genuine passion for work, as the obstacles are quite possibly endless so sacrifices need to be made.

It’s not all doom and gloom however, as nothing beats the feeling of being your own boss, demanding your own pay or working from any location. When you earn enough as a freelancer you can afford to live in a rural retreat without the worry of a commute to work.

However, relationships will become under strain as the only thoughts running through your mind are that of your next big project. Family will make demands on your time, and if you’re not careful you could burn out not long after you’ve begun.

A tip that works well with families is role play, and although it seems silly it really works. Especially if you have children and your partner will be at home taking care of them as you work.

Make sure you have a designated space for working, one that cannot be infiltrated by junk or toys. Invest in a desk that suits your personality and call the office your own. A lock on the door will keep out unwelcome distractions, although it may offend at first, explaining gently that the quicker you work, the quicker you stop, eases the egos of everyone around.

Then as you rise pretend there’s a boss watching the clock waiting for you to arrive. Resist the urge for that extra ten minutes as the sooner you start the sooner you stop. Calculate how many hours you’d happily work each day and as soon as you sit down at your desk let your partner adopt the mind-set that you’ve left for the office until home time.
