An Interview with Chris Turner of Panasonic

Martina Mercer
March21/ 2014

This year was a first for Panasonic, as Chris Turner told me they’d not had much to offer the retail sector on the front line before now.

Their solutions have always been popular with warehouses and service men on the road, such as the AA, as they keep the computer protected in all weathers while still enabling the input of data. Yet these were seen as a little too bulky when facing customers as their resistance (they can be dropped from incredible heights) obviously meant their weight was substantial compared to other POS systems.

Now they’ve launched some products to change all this with nifty new systems that still hold the Panasonic protection guarantee but are smaller, smarter and lighter.

The Toughbook and the Toughpad are available in a range of sizes and on different platforms with 10” and 7” operating on windows and a 7” Android version. They can integrate seamlessly into the retail environment and as many warehouses and delivery drivers already use Panasonics range to record data and manage stock in any weather, they will also provide the blanket cover by connecting the dots between stock and sales.

The stand was certainly busy, as Chris’s attention was taken away quite a few times as passers-by were bowled over by the simplicity and sleek design of the Toughbook. Yet when we delve deeper we see that these Toughbook’s are not only sturdy, they have environmental advantages too.

For instance, Panasonic acquired Sanyo who make their own batteries. This enables them to supply battery packs so a device doesn’t have to be charged when a shift changes, a new battery can easily be added. The battery life has been designed to last the length of a standard shift, the typical 8 hours so it is always retail ready.

On top of this Chris demonstrated its unique energy saving feature where the light adjusts according to the immediate environment, this of course has another knock on effect which ensures only the optimum amount of energy is used when in action.

All of the Toughbook’s come with 3year standard warranty, they can be bought or rented and Panasonic offer same day support, so systems are always fixed quickly if anything does happen to penetrate the unbreakable shell!

Understandably, Panasonic are excited about their new client MacDonald’s who have taken on the Toughbook, as Chris says, “In the case of McDonald’s, the company needed a product that staff would be able to use around the restaurant as well as at designated desktop stations. Staff needed to use email, have access to a number of Windows applications and the crew and management scheduling system. Another requirement was that the computers could be used in the hot kitchens and cold walk-in fridges of the restaurant and would not break if dropped from a work surface which normal devices would struggle to cope with. The Toughbook’s can handle these tough environments as they are temperature and drop resistant.”

This is obviously a huge achievement and just the start as there are many hostile environments where access to the internet or critical business data is needed.

Personally I think they should launch these in Mothercare too, as they’d be ideal for parents with toddlers!

Exclusive Interview with Daniel Lucht – The Research Director who Predicts the Future

Martina Mercer
March21/ 2014

Daniel Lucht is the researcher director of Research Farm, a company that works with FMCG manufacturers and retailers and analyses trends before compiling reports that clients can act on to improve their marketing strategies and ultimately increase sales.

I caught up with him this morning to delve a little deeper into the third annual white paper that Research Farm have produced, the Retail Predictions 2013.

Daniel, you mention in your paper that discounters will thrive in 2013, does this mean you believe loyalty schemes are the way forward for retailers?

Yes, loyalty schemes are always important as retailers have now realised that in these tough times they can make more money by focusing on existing customers and upselling rather than trying to convert new ones. Consumers will shop around however if the right deal is offered at the right time, they will stay loyal to a brand.

You mention the rise of Same Day Delivery do you think this will become the norm in 2013?

I think consumers will begin to expect the service as 2013 is showing trends of immediacy from the consumer. Every shopper wants to buy it now and receive it in hours while shopping from their tablet or laptop while at work or watching the TV. Through 2012 Amazon has opened twenty centres to be closer to customers and fulfil this need and Wal-Mart is exploring ways in which they can follow suit.

Will this compete with or complement the current click and collect trend?

I think they’ll act as one and the same, fulfilling the immediacy that a consumer desires. Retailers will look more into collect points that are placed on a journey home from work, such as the local train station, so the shopper can order from the office and doesn’t have to make a detour to pick up a package. Both will explore the logistics of making sure products can be available almost immediately in different locations.

Tesco’s claimed last year that their home delivery service actually cost at least 3 times more to provide than the cost that was given to the consumer, they toyed with the idea of increasing the cost of home delivery. Do you think the same day delivery will have a negative financial impact on businesses who adopt it initially or will these costs be passed on to the consumer?

I think initially retailers understand that there will be extra costs; it’s the chicken and the egg syndrome. Once popularity increases and they have more customers to deliver to in a certain area, they can ensure vans are full which will cut down on costs and on carbon emissions too. However, the consumer will understand that if for example, they need a party dress delivered within hours; they will have to pay a premium for that service. Like before, I don’t think they will use the service all the time but I do think they will expect it to be available.

You also mentioned that technological advancements for retailers will be slowing down this year do you think this is because investment is need to perfect the latest advancements such as NFC technology and Mobile Wallets?

I think that technology has developed very quickly over the past decade and this year retailers will focus more on collecting data and using it to increase sales, such as the loyalty schemes. Last year there was a lot of hype surrounding NFC technology however Wi-Fi is everywhere now and people can do the same using Wi-Fi just as Starbucks has proved.

Do you think it’s telling that the iPhone 5 didn’t adopt it?

Yes. If Apple offered a mobile payment solution it would be a game changer, however for NFC, so many different companies must adopt it to make it work for a single transaction, such as the handset manufacturer, the banks, the credit card companies, the retailers, and instead I think the focus will be more on offering mobile payment through Wi-Fi in store, rather than adopting NFC.

Do you think there will be any developments in the technology sector this year?

I do think there’s more to explore with mobile wallets, however I think the focus will shift to entertainment and TV shopping will see huge advancements this year.

Which Retailers do you think will thrive in 2013?

Unfortunately 2013 looks to be another tough year, as the news of Jessops, HMV and others has proved, however I think those that embrace multichannel retailing, loyalty schemes as well as the discounters will do better than the rest. Affordable discount stores such as Aldi, Primark and Ikea should do well this year as consumers continue to look for the best deals to save money, yet those who offer the consumer what they want and integrate the new trends will have a good chance of success.

Daniel collected this data through intensive research with his expert analysts, his answers are based on the findings which can also be found in his white paper, 2013 Retail Predictions.

Staying Motivated when Starting a Business

Martina Mercer
March19/ 2014

Initially motivation shouldn’t be a problem. Like many people deciding on a freelance career you will be uber enthusiastic and ready to show the world what you can do from the safety of your own studio. However, working from home or within your own limits lends itself to a myriad of temptations that are easy to give into if you don’t decide on an action plan, and then stick to it.

Motivation Sorts the Wheat from the Chaff

Many freelancers have failed because of this one simple obstacle, wrongly when choosing a self-employed career they’ve imagined catching up on day time TV or long lie ins whenever they choose. To ensure you make more than enough money to live on, and excel within your field as a freelancer you must find it within yourself to kick-start your career every single day as there’s no big boss telling you how to do.

As there is no employer ready to dock pay or give a written warning for laziness, you may assume the penalties are inconsequential. This is where many slip up. As once you have built up a good client base they will expect you to be available at least between working hours and if you’re still snoozing in bed, they’ll quite simply choose someone else.

Some Days are better than Others

In the beginning you may find you take on jobs you’d rather not for a lower fee just to secure a reputation within the freelance industry. You may also notice rejection as just like any media mogul be it a rock star a film star or singer, you are competing for the work. Your style won’t fit everyone’s expectations and it’s when these rejections hit, sometimes all at once, that you feel despondent and quite rightly plan a day off to pamper your ego. However, days off especially in the beginning are a luxury a new freelancer can’t afford. For every bad day you will have a good day when your inbox is full and you are in demand. That’s the joy of freelancing, every job is different, and you never know if today is the day you are going to land that wonderful contract that enables you to take the family to the Bahamas for the summer.

Keep Going!

There are a lot of downsides to being a freelancer; however the good definitely outweighs the bad. You are your own boss and with the right mind-set you can be the best boss you’ve ever encountered. Reward yourself for hard work and prioritise your day, and remember even if the work isn’t flooding in there’s other ways to enhance your career as you wait such as bidding for jobs or improving your social network coverage.

Exceed your Own Expectations

Keeping motivated is key to your success, and to do so you must adopt the mind-set of an employee. Set yourself goals every day and make sure you’re in your studio and available during normal working hours. Start each day with a

to do list and make sure you complete most of it before home time, you are the are your own best friend and your own worst enemy, so keep in mind what you want to achieve and where you’re headed and don’t rest until you make progress every day to get there.

Treat Yourself

When you have reached your goals for the week, or you’ve secured a new client, have a break. Enjoy a day off, or treat yourself to a day out. You thoroughly deserve it. Taking time out will refresh your mind and make sure you’re ready to start again on Monday morning.

Is Your Signal Strong Enough?

Martina Mercer
March18/ 2014

There’s no denying that a many mobile phone packages are attractive as they offer many free minutes, free texts and even free roaming, making the landline seem obsolete.

However, what’s the point in 600 free minutes if you don’t trust your signal?

You’re Not Alone

Unless you live in the hub of a large city, you’re unlikely to trust your mobile phone, even with technological advancements; many of us despair on a daily basis as we pace trying to pick up a signal- even in our own home!

The strength of a signal isn’t specific to any particular provider either, as swapping contracts doesn’t solve the problem. This is why there is a mobile phone signal booster for Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three and EE as all providers have trouble giving the signal customers deserve.

The Facts

As we watch people on the TV talk without pressure on their mobile phones many of us wonder if the problem is actually unique to us, if we somehow live in a black spot and everyone else enjoys perfect coverage all of the time.

In fact a staggering 69% of people say they have taken steps to improve their mobile phone signal at home!

Jump Around

If you’ve ever watched someone trying to boost their own mobile phone signal you’ll have probably giggled as they’ve waved their phone around, moved it across the room as if trying to detect ghosts on Ghostbuster and even climbed onto sofas and chairs just looking for that extra bar. With 23% of people giving up and using a landline instead is there really any point in those free minutes?

Staying Connected

As the mobile and smartphone industry saw growth of 90% (the largest in history) last year, businesses are investing heavily in the technology for their employees. Suddenly the lack of a signal doesn’t simply mean a friend or family member is cut off, it can lose businesses millions of pounds.

Statistics reveal that currently 80% of companies in the UK rely on mobile phones! This corporate pickup is set to rise as leaders notice an increase in productivity, customer loyalty and network possibilities.

Look at the Map

Despite this rise a recent map released by Ofcom shows that less than 20% of Britain has 3G signal coverage*. This means that millions of mobile phone users are currently carrying phones that are only doing their job when connected to a Wi-Fi signal, and then voice calls will still break up.

As 4G is launched, the statistics are even more dire as the country isn’t prepared for the advancements, leaving many struggling to claim those free credits and leaving businesses out in the cold.

Fixing the Problem

With this in mind many mobile phone users forget that they are paying for contracts they rarely use, few get the full deal out of their add ons, and many use their mobile phone for internet surfing over Wi-Fi alone.

You don’t have to be powerless though as the mobile phone signal booster for Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three and EE from us will ensure you make the most of your mobile every day. Once installed in your home or office you can start enjoying your phone the way you’re supposed to with clarity of calls, no dropped signal and no frustration at all.

You’ll never again have to reach out of a window, shout the words, “can you hear me now?” or stand very still as you capture that extra bar. Within one month, you’ll see you not only feel less stressed using the mobile phone signal booster; you’ll save an incredible amount of money on your calls too! Businesses can even complete those conversions with confidence!
